Directorate of Political Affairs
The Ministry's Directorate of Political Affairs (D1) determines and coordinates Luxembourg's foreign policy position and supports the development of bilateral relations with countries outside the European Union. The Directorate of Political Affairs monitors major geopolitical issues. It also prepares the Foreign Affairs Council, which brings together the member states' foreign ministers of the European Union every month.
Luxembourg is strongly committed to multilateralism. The Directorate of Political Affairs contributes, within its areas of competence, to Luxembourg's representation in international organisations, particularly the UN, NATO, the OSCE, and the Council of Europe. It works closely with the permanent representations of the diplomatic network to coordinate Luxembourg's position in these multilateral bodies.
The Directorate of Political Affairs is also responsible for respect for human rights. In multilateral and bilateral forums, Luxembourg actively promotes human rights. The Directorate monitors the UN Covenants and Conventions in this area. It participates in implementing the National Action Plan "Women and Peace and Security".
In the field of security, disarmament and non-proliferation of conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction, as well as vectors of this latter category, remain one of Luxembourg's priorities. The Directorate of Political Affairs is responsible for monitoring and implementing the relevant conventions in this field and contributing to export controls in this area.
