Relations with international organisations
Involvement within international organisations is a pillar of Luxembourg foreign policy. Luxembourg is deeply committed to an effective multilateral system that revolves around the United Nations System, more important than ever in maintaining international peace and security and ensuring sustainable development for all, based on respect for and the protection of human rights, which remain universal, indivisible and inalienable.
To contribute to this goal, Luxembourg plays an active part in the work of the organisations of which it is a member: the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations Organisation (UNO), Luxembourg having been a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2013 and 2014.
Luxembourg’s involvement in international organisations is rooted above all in defending and respecting the law. The latter must guide both relations between States and relations between individuals in each country, and help promote fundamental rights and the rule of law. In its efforts to work for greater peace, security and stability throughout the world, Luxembourg accords particular importance to the respect for human rights, combating impunity, the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and to disarmament.
