Relations with international organisations

Involvement in international organisations is a pillar of Luxembourg's foreign policy. Luxembourg is strongly committed to an effective multilateral system with the United Nations at its center, a system that is more important than ever for maintaining peace, ensuring international security and promoting sustainable development for all. This commitment is based on respect  and protection of human rights, which are universal, indivisible and inalienable.

To achieve this objective, the Directorate of Political Affairs is responsible for representing Luxembourg's foreign policy within the international organisations  of which it is a member: the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations Organisation (UNO), where Luxembourg has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2013 and 2014.

Luxembourg's involvement in international organisations is based above all on cooperation an the respect for the rule of law. This principle must govern relations  between states as well as interactions among individuals in each country while promoting  fundamental rights and the rule of law. In its pursuit of global  peace, security and stability, Luxembourg places particular emphasis on the respect for human rights, the fight against impunity, the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction an disarmament.
