Human Rights
By tirelessly supporting the cause of human rights and the rule of law, upholding values of freedom, equality, and dignity of all people while opposing tyranny and arbitrariness. Through its foreign policy, Luxembourg promotes solidarity and responsibility to combat inequality and injustice. In multilateral forums (UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, etc.), Luxembourg remains committed advancing respect for human rights worldwide, grounded in the principles that shaped the international order established after the Second World War.
The Directorate of Political Affairs works closely with Luxembourg's permanent representations in New York, Geneva, Strasbourg and Brussels to define and promote the country's human rights policy. It is responsible for preparing human rights working groups and for overseeing the implementation of UN covenants and conventions within its areas of responsibility.
In coordination with the Ambassador at-Large for Human Rights, and through dialogue with private sector stakeholders, the adoption of the "Luxembourg National Action Plan on the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (NAP)" aims to raise awareness among national and international companies about their human rights responsibility.
Under the leadership of Ambassador Georges Santer, Luxembourg assumed the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in 2019, a role it held until March 2020.
