Women and peace and security
Luxembourg is committed to the ‘Women, Peace and Security’ agenda in the context of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), which denounces the disproportionate impact of armed conflict on women and girls and recognises the need for women's active participation in peace processes. Following the successful implementation of a first national action plan from 2018 to 2023, the second Women, Peace and Security national action plan for the period 2024-2029 is currently being drawn up.
"Women and Peace and Security" National Action Plan
On 13 July 2018, the Government of Luxembourg adopted its first National Action Plan on "Women and Peace and Security" (Pdf, 19.42 Mb) for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000). Resolution 1325 has become an indispensable tool for the international community’s efforts towards strengthening peace and security.
The Action Plan enables Luxembourg, as a Member State of the United Nations, the EU and NATO, to strengthen its longstanding commitment to “Women and Peace and Security” and to support more consistently international efforts in this area. It establishes an important link with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Sustainable Development Goals 5 (gender equality) and 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions). It also takes into account the obligations derived from the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
The Action Plan enables Luxembourg to intervene at all levels of peace and security processes, by consolidating efforts for the implementation of Resolution 1325 in its foreign policy such as commitments in the multilateral sphere, participation in peace and stabilisation missions, development cooperation), and by strengthening prevention and protection mechanisms at the national level.
