Working at the Ministry

Any job vacancy at the Ministry (all careers) is published on the Govjobs.lu website. Individuals with an interest in working for the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MAE) are therefore invited to check the website regularly, where they will be guided through the application submission procedure.

In terms of recruitment, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade does not consider unsolicited applications.

Diplomatic entrance exam

Each year the Ministry organises a multi-stage entrance exam to recruit candidates interested in a career in the Luxembourg diplomatic corps.

The acceptance criteria for the diplomatic entrance exam are as follows:

  • To have successfully passed the general section of the national competitive exam for a career in the higher higher administrative career (A1 career level)
  • To be the holder of a qualification awarded by a higher education establishment certifying the successful completion of a Masters (or equivalent)
  • To hold Luxembourg nationality

Becoming involved in development cooperation

Individuals wishing to become involved in development cooperation are invited to consult the Direcorate for development cooperation's website: How to become involved in cooperation? where the calls for application are to be found.

Internships

Throughout the year, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs offers students enrolled in higher education (at least in their 2nd year of university) the opportunity to do an internship at the department in Luxembourg or at one of the embassies and representations of the diplomatic network abroad.

Length of placement

  • The duration of an internship may vary from several weeks to a maximum of 6 months over a 24-month period, except for internships agreedas part of university studies, where this duration may be exceeded.
  • Paid internships of 4 weeks or more

How do I apply?

A cover letter in French and a Curriculum Vitae (in PDF or Word format) should be sent to stagiaires.etudiants@mae.etat.lu, specifying the Directorate, Embassy or Permanent Representation where the student would like to do the internship.

Electoral observation missions

Recognising that democratic elections are the basis of any legitimate government, the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs takes part in electoral observation missions organised by the European Union, as well as by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Interested candidates are invited to send their request for information, electronically, at observations.electorales@mae.etat.lu.
